Chapter 8

SAVAUNT had no trouble supporting Lena, but she threw herself into wedding planning as he urged her not to stress about finding another job. We shall be rid of this place soon enough. He sneered as he woke up on Jake’s couch the morning of their wedding.

Jake had aided him, so he did not begrudge his friendship. Even so, it proved difficult to block his many prejudices against humans. He sat up and looked around the living room with its clashing easy chairs and end table that had obviously been used passed their prime. The place was still.

The night before had been an embarrassment. Jake and his roommate took him out with Rick, to display their belief in a customary ritual that seemed a man must make a mockery of himself the night before his wedding. Savaunt had loathed every moment of it, especially the strip club. Naked women dancing to excite did not entertain him. He fantasized about biting into their tender flesh to taste their insides as he had refrained from imbibing in any human meat since before he discovered his love for Lena.

The stale stench of smoke and alcohol still clung to his clothes and made him cough. He stood up and scratched his stomach as he peeled out of his jeans and T-shirt to take a shower. As he walked to the bathroom, Jake met him in the hall with an awkward air as he stood naked. “Hey, man.”

“Good morning.” Savaunt stepped aside to let Jake use the toilet.

When Jake came out, he rubbed his head. “You ready for today?”

“Been waiting for it.”

“Hope you don’t have too much of a hangover.”

Savaunt laughed. “I do not get hangovers.”

“I wish I could say the same.” Jake stumbled to the kitchen and Savaunt sighed.

He missed Lena. His heart grew heavy, full of his undying love, and the burden of keeping his true identity from her. He grabbed a tattered towel from the linen closet and entered the bathroom, ready to wash his worries away under the force of the shower. It still amazed him that humans no longer regularly bathed in still water, but the rush of hydration as he turned the shower knob did calm his thoughts.

Lena had seemed shocked the first time she witnessed him soaping up under a cold shower, but the shock to his body reminded him of his plan. He had left behind a warm, fulfilling life because it had something missing. Her cold world may not suit him, but it offered her.

Guilt struck him as he stood beneath the beating pearls of water once again. He tried to push Desmond from his mind, but the only thing missing from this day could not escape him. It must be akin to the pain that Lena feels at the loss of Keri’s friendship, he realized.

Even after weeks, she had still mourned her friend’s absence. He tried again and again to console her, but it remained the only aspect of her life that he could not brighten.
